A beautiful coming-of-age story about a young boy trying to navigate the challenges of growing up with a physical handicap and the over-protective restrictions of a mother haunted by the guilt of "the family secrets".
My journey in writing children's literature began 47 years ago. My husband and I moved from the San Francisco Bay area to a ranch out of Troy, Oregon. The town of Troy had a population of 25 people. If you included the ranch population it was 150 people.
I was a mother of 3 girls, ranch wife and general hand. A few years after our 3rd daughter was born we hit some hard times. My mother-in-law, who lived with us, developed cancer and had to move closer to medical care. That care was 2 hours from the ranch. I took care of her as best I could through her chemo therapy. Then one night our house burned to the ground. We had a bad crop year and our ranch was foreclosed.. On top of that I was pregnant with our 4th daughter, unplanned. From Troy we moved to a small town in the Grand Ronde Valley of Eastern Oregon and reinvented ourselves.
Amidst all this tragedy and upheaval I wrote stories for our girls. There are reams of stories that just need the light of day.
I think most writers fill page after page with scenes, characters, and impossible problems to solve. If we're lucky on of our characters miraculously saves the day.
My first publishing income was $20 for a greeting card idea. Next I sold a short Christmas story to a magazine. These two things took years to accomplish. Like a fine wine sometimes stories need to relax and grow in strength.
Twelve years ago I self published a picture book with the help of my 4th daughter. Now I have a middle grade reader to add to my publishing credits.
Through all these years the one constant has been my husband. He always had faith in me and encouraged me to follow my dreams. Whether it was joining writers groups, I belong to 2, or attending seminars and conferences, he always told me to go, to learn my craft and network with other authors.
People ask me how I write my stories and all I can say is my characters write them. I have an idea, a starting point and where I think it will end. In between start and finish my main character takes over. When I started "Family Secrets" my step-grandson was my inspiration. He over came some of his physical handicaps and his over protective mother to bloom with independence.
I was once told, "writers write, always!" It is so true. I'm working on another middle grade reader and dipping my toe into an adult mystery. Writing is a journey with a wrinkled paper map and no GPS. Sometimes you will hit bumpy roads and washouts. You won't know exactly where you're going, so just pick up your pen or open your tablet and have fun!
I love feed back, good or bad. If you are interested to learn more about my writing, have a critique or review for my book or would like more information on where to purchase my works, please reach out.
Look forward to hearing from you!
My mystery Hide & Seek was a featured selection at Cook Memorial Library in La Grande, Or. So happy that they chose my book to spot light.
